How to tag photos

Conceptual and descriptive tags

For photos, it’s important to not only describe the image, but also the concept, what does the image brings to mind? We should mix both conceptual and descriptive tags.

  • With conceptual tags we describe what the image transmits. In this case, we see a group of girls in summer wear; so we should use tags that reference summer time.
  • With the descriptive tags we can define what we see in the image. Girls, cellphone, dress; we see they’re in an urban area, etc. Perhaps the cellphone is the most important element in the image, as this is what all the girls are looking at.

Describing the elements of the image from most to least relevant

In the previous example the concepts that stood out the most were: friendship, holidays, travel, experience, youth…And the tags descriptive tags went from girls, cellphone, fashion… to details such as summer wear or shorts.

Avoid words that seem obvious

As these images are photographs, tags like photo, image or photography should be avoided (unless the image is of a camera or other photography related equipment and therefore, the tag is vital to the description). On the other hand, the image could be of a person or group of people taking photos, in which case, it does make sense to reference photography.

To sum up, avoid tags that don’t contribute to the description of the image.

All the tags must make sense and be conceptually and visually descriptive

Tags referring to color aren’t necessary. But if the colors in the image stand out, we can use colorful or colors as descriptive tags. Or in the case of vectors, if a background is completely red, we could add red as a descriptive tag.
